Historical Background
Upper Mustang was an independent Buddhist kingdom until 2008 when the monarchy was abolished. The region was closed to outsiders until 1992, preserving its Tibetan Buddhist culture virtually unchanged for centuries.
Legends & Mythology
Mustang’s founder, the warrior Ame Pal, is said to have beheaded a demoness whose body formed the landscape. The Lo Manthang palace was built on the demon’s heart to suppress evil forces.
